Beverly Schwartz

Bio

I was born in 1961 in Boston, Massachusetts. I grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts, on the North Shore of Boston. Other than 3 years at Northfield Mount Hermon School (private high school in Franklin County, MA), and 2 years at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), I have been in the Boston area all my life.

Home and Family

I am now settled in Somerville, Massachusetts, with my wife Miriam and my son David. My entire family - parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and first cousins - are within an hour's drive of Boston. Family gatherings are quite a treat!

Interests

I am a member of Havurat Shalom, a small, egalitarian, Jewish Community in Somerville, founded in 1968.

We are strong supporters of the rights of all people to marry whom they choose. Here is an extensive report on my personal experiences with the movement for marriage for same-sex couples.

Miriam and I used to go caving with the Boston grotto before David was born. I used to survey Mammoth Cave with Cave Research Foundation, and unexpectedly got to go into Bedquilt Cave, the cave the computer game "adventure " is based on. I have a special fondness for Clarksville Cave in Albany County NY. I almost lost my life in this cave. My rescue is referenced here.

We recently purchased a Yamaha Disklavier GranTouch Digital Grand Piano from Boston Organ & Piano. I've been greatly enjoying playing again, having taken 10 years of piano lessons as a kid, and a term of organ lessons while at Northfield Mount Hermon School.

Miriam and I started SSEAP (Somerville Special Education Advocacy Project), a foundation to help Somerville parents of special needs children get advocacy resources. WBUR did a story on SSEAP called Disability Services in Somerville by Toni Randolph. The story aired during Morning Edition on August 4, 2003.
