The MGR was a high-speed, multiprotocol router capable of handling
the higher speeds and capacities required by the next generation
of internetworking circa 1995. It was sponsored by DARPA.
BBN performed this research 1995 to 1998.
A primary result was that fast path IP packet processing can
be performed quickly enough to keep up with gigabit per second links.
A number of commercial Terabit scale routers spun out of this project.
